SIPOC

O'PEEP'S SIPOC EXPLANATION

You've been at your best friend's barbecue for 3 hours and you're on the verge of starvation. There is neither pasta salad nor bratwurst. You want to quickly find out what is going wrong! You wonder whom you should help now to boost the supply process?
A SIPOC is the method of your choice!

A SIPOC is also referred to as a "High-Level Process Map". SIPOC is a bird's-eye view of a process that visualizes the essentials: The function of the process, process inputs and outputs in the form of information and material, process boundaries, and the stakeholders of the process.

WHEN TO WORK WITH SIPOC?

A SIPOC is a very versatile tool.

  • It helps set the project framework and define a project: What is the process associated with the project? What is the process behind a problem? Tip: If the metrics for project goals don't show up as outputs in your SIPOC, you may not have gotten the right process, yet.
  • If you want to map a process, you can use SIPOC to define the process boundaries in advance. With which step does the process start, with which step does it end?
  • With a SIPOC you can quickly identify the process customers and their requirements for the project. These are often considered as stakeholders in the project.
  • A SIPOC shows relevant input variables for the process and who is responsible for them (suppliers).
